How do we do Earth Day? As farmers, we operate in "Earth Day" mode every day. We depend on the land in every step of the operation, and have a great responsibility in land stewardship. Check out some of the practices you see on our partner farms: 🌱 Buffer Zones: you'll find ample strips of grass between waterways and farm fields- preventing nutrient runoff and keeping our rivers and streams clean and healthy 💩 Drag lining: Manure is often injected (vs spread) over fields that require the nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) for crop growth. This means that the nutrients get into the soil directly, preventing surface runoff and better nutrient retention 👍 🌽 Cover Cropping: cover crops are planted in the "off season" on corn fields, holding the soil in place and preventing erosion- not to mention nutrient cycling! 🐄 Pasture Management: rotational grazing, allowing regrowth, and proper pasture management allows cows to get optimal feed while we ensure that the soil is healthy and productive- did you know cattle return about 85% of the nutrients they consume back to the pasture?
